Today you're going to have a taste of deconstruction for the sake of understanding spatial continuity. If you have no idea what I just wrote, you will after this assignment.

Follow these directions CAREFULLY and IN ORDER.
1. CLICK this link
2. READ the article on the page (ignore the Comments section)
3. READ the script pages from The Dark Knight that the article references.
4. WATCH the second video clip on the page. It is the scene you just read. Enjoy the explosions.
5. WRITE a paragraph describing the scene you just watched. Does it match the script?
6. Now, WATCH the first video clip to see the deconstruction and analysis of the scene.
7. Lastly, in the same document as step 5, ANSWER the question: Do mismatches in spatial continuity ruin this scene, why or why not?

As I explained to you twice during the last week of school, you have a summer assignment.

To make sure you keep sharp on your filmmaking and storytelling skills, your assignment is to watch and summarize all 20 episodes of the 2 Reel Guys podcast.

Type up all your summaries in a Google Docs document and share it with me as soon as you get started. Each summary should be a few sentences, but no more than a paragraph.

If Norman & Larry publish any more episodes in the next two months, watch and summarize those ones too.

For most of you, a lot of these podcasts will cover material you are very familiar with. A good review never hurt anyone though. All new information you learn from these podcasts is essential for your success this school year.

BONUS ASSIGNMENT:
If you want to hit the ground running with our Avid Media Composer training this Fall, I urge you to start watching these official tutorials videos from Avid.

Three-Minute Project: DV Start/Stop Detect

So you've captured your footage, but it's all in a few big chunks, or even just one clip. You've done the following before, but nonetheless, here is a reminder.

Use the DV Start/Stop Detect function from the mark menu to create markers on your clips. Name the markers in the browser, then create subclips from the markers. This is called logging, even though it is not the traditional method.

A naming convention I would suggest is to start with the scene and take number, then a shot size, the character, then a camera movement. For example if you have scene 2B, take 3, which is a medium close-up of David that zooms in, the name might be:

2B-3_MCU_David_push

Look at Step 4 at this link for details. DO NOT edit anything until all footage is logged.

Beginning Video Production (Per. 1, 2, & 4)

This week, let's write a script. So far, you've made a one-shot silent movie (The Lumiere). You've shot a scene from a gritty cop show (The Interrogation). Now let's get those creative juices flowing on a new three-minute original project.

Here is link to a page of suggestions to help you come up with an original story. Read it and see if any of the suggestions spark a fire in your mind.

The first step is to write out the story as you would in your English class: in simple prose, as a short story. You may write it in any tense you'd like. If you can't decide on one idea to write about, write two of them.

Two guidelines: 1) The story must be of subject matter appropriate enough to be approved by your ENTIRE family. 2) It must be a story that can be believably staged and filmed on campus.

This is due on Wednesday, April 1st. The next step will be revealed on that day.

Type a one-page story in screenplay format about a student who is distracted from or having trouble reaching their goal of graduating. The next part will show how the student overcomes the distraction or trouble by "trying." Then show how the student has succeeded, or how he/she can "make" it.

If you are having trouble with the format, try searching for screenplay templates for your word processor. Here is an example.

Advanced Video Production Period 6 - Here We Go!

Ladies and gents, we've got a big week ahead of us.

On Tuesday, we will share all of our story ideas for the "Make It If You Try" music video project.

We will also be assigning textbooks for everyone to take home and start reading. By Friday, February 20, read Chapters 1 through 3 (pps. 1-33) from the Pulling Off Your Shorts text. Make sure to study the "Reshoot" sections of each chapter.

For further help in Chapter 2, please read the following link from the Scriptwriters Network Website.

On Tuesday, it is expected that Jordon and Joshua have a shooting draft finished for their Untitled RR Project, which means two things: One, they will now begin to break down the script for Locations, Characters, Props and Wardrobe. If you are interested in a crew position, please speak to Joshua and Jordon. The second thing it means is that they need a title. Those who first get to read the shooting draft, please make a few suggestions, those boys are stuck. Also, let's congratulate them on being the first group to start Pre-Production.
